Joel motioned to the phone, though he had no intention of making the call. He sensed Kate understood that but he waited for her answer anyway.

She shook her head weakly.

‘No?’

‘I think you should let me go.’

‘Can’t do that, Kate. The trial resumes Monday morning. They’re saying there could be a verdict by as early as next Friday, if things go badly for my client. And they will if Mark testifies. Word is the prosecution team have a secret witness.’

Kate’s eyes were fixed on his but he saw her hand stray towards the photograph of her husband again.

‘If what you’re saying is really true and Mark is alive – if he’s been inside my flat – it stands to reason you should let me go.’

‘Oh? How so?’

‘Because if he’s followed me once he’ll follow me again. If he’s come to my flat once he’ll come to it again.’

‘And then what? You’ll call me if you see him?’

He stared at her, shook his head.

But then he saw the flicker of a smile on Kate’s lips. It was a broken, painful smile.

‘You won’t let me go because you know you’re lying,’ she told him. ‘You won’t let me go because you know Mark is dead.’ She paused and looked up towards the corner of the ceiling, tears in her eyes. ‘I want to see Maggie now.’

‘No.’

‘I have to know she’s OK.’

‘I can’t help you, Kate.’

‘This is crazy.’

‘Is it?’

She nodded, and this time her face began to crumple. ‘Mark is dead.’

He waited. Again, that burning in his bloodstream. And a tick-tick-tick like a clock running too fast inside his head.

In all the interviews he’d conducted over the years, all the quests for the truth he’d been tasked with, he’d always prided himself on his self-discipline. His patience and objectivity.

It was a shock to find how easily it could all slip.

‘He should be, Kate. I’ll give you that. He should have gone down with the rest of that plane.’
